Christ is Risen

This morning I'd like to share one of my favorite songs for use in contemporary Evangelical worship. And without a doubt, Matt Maher's "Christ is Risen" is beautifully, beautifully top-notch in that regard. Although the artist himself is actually Roman Catholic, the song is saturated in the pure and glorious truths that all those who profess Christ as the risen Lord can and ought to proclaim. Because all of us can bear testimony that Christ is Lord and he is risen!

O death, where is your sting?
O hell, where is your victory?
O church, come stand in the light,
The glory of God has defeated the night!

Sing it: O death, where is your sting?
O hell, where is your victory?
O church, come stand in the light,
Our God is not dead; he's alive, he's alive!

Christ is risen from the dead,
Trampling over death by death;
Come awake, come awake,
Come and rise up from the grave....

This recording doesn't quite do the song justice. Instead, imagine a beautiful chapel packed solid with Christians from every tribe and homeland, and all of them singing the song so joyously that one can't help but recognize it as a song of victory, singing it with cheering and rejoicing before the Lord and hands lifted high in unabashed worship. That was my first encounter with this song, here at seminary. And I've been in love with it ever since.
